Assuring Our Customers Positive Experience Always Comes First

Why Yellowstone Fly Shop?

At the Yellowstone Fly Shop (YFS) we have one simple mission “to create memorable fly fishing experiences for friends, family and clients that share the same passion for the sport.” You see, we eat, sleep and breathe it everyday, and we are so grateful to make fly-fishing a part of our everyday lives.  At the end of the day, we are here to ensure that every YFS trip is enjoyable, educational and most importanly, safe.  Whether you choose to take advantage of the wade fishing or floating, the combination of being on the water, taking in the scenery and enjoying the world class fishing in the Greater Yellowstone area is hard to beat.

What sets Yellowstone Fly Shop trips apart is all YFS Guides have been hands-on fly fisherman and in the industry for many years.  This means we know where to fish, can educate on equipment and provide instruction relevant to the current conditions.  To help with your decision about why to choose Yellowstone Fly Shop Guides, we have listed some of the most common questions we get from clients:

What if I am new to fly-fishing or have never fly-fished before, what can I expect?

      • Our guides are excellent instructors and love to teach new anglers the sport of fly fishing.  If you’re brand new or have only been fly fishing once or twice, there is no need to worry we have the perfect guides to show you the way.

How long is a half day versus full day fly fishing trips?

      • In general and depending on travel time to and from the chosen river, expect around 4 hours on the water fishing with our half day trips. With full day trips, clients can expect to spend 8+ hours on the water chasing their dreams.  If your schedule permits, a full day guide trip offers the best overall experience.  Spending the entire day with your guide provides opportunities to travel greater distances, access to our full range of fisheries, and more time on the water.

When are the best months to fish?

      • Our Guides and clients would say the “best time” is from late June (after spring runoff) to mid-October with the most consistent fishing being during the months of July, August and September.
      • If you are not frightened by a little weather, some rain and cooler temps, our shoulder seasons (April to June and September to mid-November?) can make for some of the best fishing for the largest trout of the season.

How do you decide where to fish?

      • With so many options, we get asked a lot, which river(s) do we fish?  The answer is, we fish based on what you want your trip to be.  That said, our guides are full of intel because they are on the water and scouting the area daily during the busy months to find the best fishing opportunities.   So, unless you have something specific in mind, we will plan the best trip based on experience level, time of year, time of day in order to provide the best experience.  If you have questions before booking, email us at: almondkerry@yellowstoneflyshop.com

Do you guide in other areas in addition to Yellowstone National Park?

      • While we specialize in guiding all of the amazing waters within Yellowstone National Park, including the backcountry, we also guide on several lesser known rivers that don’t experience as much pressure but offer just as much incredible fishing.

What about “Back Country Fishing” – do you offer that?

      • Yes, YFS does offer back country fly-fishing, we specialize in it actually, and the experience is one of truly remarkable views and tranquility; however due to the terrain and often extensive walking/hiking, anglers need to be in good physical condition and able to walk at least 4 miles round trip while carrying some gear. Due to the amount of time required, back country fishing trips are scheduled as full day trips.

What is the max number of anglers for a wade and float trip?

      • Depending on the skill level our guides can handle up to 3 adults during a wading trip, but this will not provide the clients with as much one-on-one instruction, so is only recommended for individuals that already understand the basics to fly fishing. While drift fishing we can handle up to 2 anglers in the boat. Anymore than two individuals in the boat results in overcrowding hindering the anglers casting options.

What clothing is required?

      • Aside from normal fishing dear (waders, wading boots), planning for all types of weather is a must. You will be fly fishing in Rocky Mountains with there is always the potential for some of the nasty weather.  Our guides have fished through it all on many occasions and while blue skies would be preferred by many it’s just not possible all the time. We recommend you come prepared for any type of weather.  Not matter the time of year, a light fleece jacket or sweatshirt and a quality raincoat should always be in your bag.  Its always recommended to pack a hat, suncreen, bug spary and other  items to assure your comfort while on the trip.

Our guides will give every client a 100% every day to make your day safe, enjoyable and educational. This said, no one is perfect and our Guides are always open to feedback which helps us assure that we are meeting your expectations, so open dialogue is always welcome and appreciated.  Whether you choose to take advantage of the wade fishing or floating, we are sure you will be back a second time.  The combination of being on the water, taking in the scenery and enjoying the world class fishing in the Greater Yellowstone area is hard to beat.
